Charlotte Mother Speaks Out In Court To Man On Trial For Killing Her Son

CHARLOTTE — An emotional day in court Thursday as a Charlotte mother speaks directly to a judge, and the man who killed her son on Father’s Day two years ago.Β  33-year-old Christopher Washington was shot and killed at a home on Mona Drive in North Charlotte on June 21, 2020.

Investigators say a fight broke out when Charles Smith went to the home where his ex girlfriend lived to visit his children.Β  Smith shot Washington in the chest, and then ran away from the scene.Β  Another person also got hurt.Β  Washington died at the hospital.Β  The victim’s mother spoke out in court.

“I understand it was the heat of the moment, and you don’t think, but I just want him to know I don’t hate him,” says Sheila Washington, the victim’s mother.

Charles Smith apologized to the victim’s family in court.Β  He pled guilty to voluntary manslaughter and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.Β  The judge sentenced him up to seven years in prison.
