PRETORIA, SOUTH AFRICA — Paralympic athlete Oscar Pistorius whispered and broke down while testifying in his murder trial. At one point, he spoke so quietly, the judge in South Africa asked him to speak up. Pistorius is accused of shooting his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. He says he mistoook her for an intruder. At one point during the testimony, Pistorius spoke directly to his girlfriend’s family.
“You’re the first people I think of, the first people I pray for,” he said. “I can’t imagine the pain, sorrow, and emptiness I’ve caused your family.”
Pistorius also testified that his mother always had guns and raised him to be scared of criminals. Prosecutors believe Pistorius killed Steenkamp out of jealousy.
