CHARLOTTE, NC– Following political scandal comes damage control. As all eyes focus on Charlotte’s new mayor Dan Clodfelter, political experts say the time is now to start working to regain the public’s trust.
WCCB Political contributor Mary Curtis says the city of Charlotte needs to see transparency and accountability from the city’s new leader.
“Just saying things are going to be alright, and don’t you worry about it, that’s not going to work,” says Curtis. “The citizens of Charlotte want to move forward.”
Curtis says as with any new leader following political controversy, Clodfelter has a long ‘to-do’ list. “There’s going to have to be dialogue. When people have questions, they want answers,” says Curtis. “They want an open government as well as a government with integrity.”
Curtis says to restore the people’s trust in local government, Mayor Clodfelter needs to be open, willing to listen, and available right out of the gates. She also says the new mayor needs to get a firm handle on the inner workings of Charlotte’s business community while continuing communication with state leaders in Raleigh–that includes discussions about the city and the state’s on-going battle over Charlotte-Douglas International Airport.
“The airport issue, like so many other political issues, has been tainted by this,” says Curtis.
Curtis says whether it’s the battle for control of the airport, or the fight to win the trust of residents, Charlotte’s new mayor has a lot of work to do.
