CHARLOTTE, NC — The latest count shows fewer homeless people are living in Charlotte-Mecklenburg. Researchers found 2,014 people living on Charlotte’s streets or staying in shelters during a count on January 29. That’s down 17 percent from the same time last year. The annual study is done by UNC Charlotte’s Uban Institute with the help of police and other organizations.
“Those efforts are paying off,” said Pamela Jefsen of Supportive Housing Communities. “And we are better understanding where we can effectively put our resources to have the most good.”
There are more people who have been homeless for over a year, and the number of homelss veterans increased by more than 30 percent this year to 157.
