National Hook-up of Black Women, Inc. will host its 39th Annual Meeting, themed “Mission Possible” on Thursday, April 24, 2014 through Sunday, April 27, 2014 at the Charlotte Marriott City Center, located at 100 W. Trade Street, Charlotte, NC. Annually, the organization hosts a momentous breakfast event to celebrate its patron saint, Fannie Lou Hammer. Fannie Lou Hamer became an icon and is recognized as one of the most powerful black women leaders in the struggle for blacks to vote. Every year, NHBW, Inc. bestows the highest honor to someone with a vision who has also shown courage and commitment to service. This year‘s Keynote speaker and Fannie Lou Hamer Award recipient is Commissioner Vilma Leake. She is recognized as being a trailblazer and an advocate for fundamental rights. Her exemplary commitment and compassion for others is non-wavering. Commissioner Leake was first elected to the Mecklenburg County Board of Commissioners in 2008. She currently serves on the North Carolina Association of County Commissioners Public Education Steering Committee and the National Association of Counties (NACo) National Board of Large Urban Counties Caucus Steering Committee. National Hook-Up of Black Women, Inc. (NHBW, Inc.) is a national, nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization formally established in 1974. The national agenda dedicates itself to improving the lives of women and their families through support of the arts, culture, health and human service initiatives. Their goal is to affect the community at its source. Attained achievement comes through the empowerment of the twenty plus chapters, assembled throughout the United States.
