Emergency Crews Prepare for Rain and Flooding
CHARLOTTE, NC — “We do have a couple swift water rescue teams that are ready to go. They are on standby. We won’t call them in until we see a need for that,” said Deputy Chief Granger with Charlotte Fire Department.
From the Charlotte Fire Department, to the Department of Transportation, emergency crews are preparing for the rain expected hit Charlotte.
“Street maintenance crews have been activated today and are currently cleaning storm water inlets. Those crews will be on call throughout the rain event,” said Phil Reiger, Deputy Director of the Dept. of Transportation.
County Storm Water says they have a 24-hour automated system ready to activate the flood warning system if needed. They’re also asking for people to do their part.
“Avoid or refrain from moving yard waste to the curb throughout the rain event. By doing so, you’ll help us keep the storm water inlets clean,” said Josh McSwain with Storm Water Services.
CMPD reminds everyone not to drive in standing water, to park and walk to safety and keep a close watch on your kids while outside.
“Don’t allow children to play in flood water, don’t allow them to take the raft trip down a swollen creek. Those situations can turn dangerous very quickly,” said CMPD Chief Jeff Estes.
MEDIC will also have extra crews on standby and remind people of the first call to make if they get stuck in flood waters.
“Contact 911. Our emergency dispatches are going to talk to you on how you can help yourself get out of that situation while responders are heading to you,” said Lester Oliva with MEDIC.
Also Char-Meck 311 will be on standby to extend their hours through the weekend and will have constant condition updates recorded when you call.
