World Champion Runner Visits Mecklenburg County School to Encourage Students to Make Healthy Choices

Local SUBWAY® restaurants in Charlotte and surrounding areas are encouraging kids to eat right and get active this October by tracking their healthy habits during the annual two-week “Fit for Life” Challenge. New this year, kids can use a mobile-friendly website to conveniently input their progress at home, school or on vacation.

To get the fitness party started, 2012 silver medalist Manteo Mitchell will kick off this year’s challenge with a visit to Polo Ridge Elementary School, where more than 1,000 students will be taking the Subway Challenge. Schools that hold a kickoff event during the Subway Fit for Life Challenge will be eligible to win a RUN JUMP THROW equipment kit, valued at $1,000.

Manteo Mitchell is an Olympic silver medalist and N.C. native who specializes in the 200m and 400m. During the 2012 London Olympic Games, Mitchell suffered a broken leg, but still finished his leg of the relay – a story that helped to make him famous. Leading up to his Olympic silver medal in 2012, Mitchell attended Western Carolina University where he broke numerous school records. He is training to earn a spot on Team U.S.A. for the 2016 Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro.
