CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) β Hendrick Motorsports has locked up Jimmie Johnson and sponsor Lowe’s with a 2-year contract extension through the 2017 season. The organization had previously signed crew chief Chad Knaus to an extension through 2018. The extensions were finalized as Johnson prepared for the opening race of NASCAR’s playoffs.
UNDATED (AP) – College football’s early-season injury bug is wreaking havoc with quarterbacks. Notre Dame’s Malik Zaire fractured an ankle and South Carolina’s Connor Mitch separated his shoulder Saturday, joining a growing fraternity of quarterbacks with significant injuries. Zaire is out for the season. Mitch, who also has a bruised hip, is out four to six weeks.
ATLANTA (AP) β Julio Jones had 141 yards receiving and two touchdowns, Matt Ryan shook off a pair of interceptions, and the Atlanta Falcons came back to beat the Philadelphia Eagles 26-24 last night after squandering a 17-point halftime lead. Ricardo Allen’s interception off a deflected pass sealed the victory with 1:11 remaining.
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) β Tennessee defensive end/linebacker Curt Maggitt is out indefinitely after injuring his hip Saturday in a 31-24 overtime loss to Oklahoma. Volunteers coach Butch Jones said yesterday that Maggitt would miss “an extended period of time” and that he might have a more specific timetable later this week.
