PITTSBURGH (AP) β Anthony Rizzo started a six-run fifth inning with a two-run homer and the Cubs went on to beat Pittsburgh 9-6 to take three out of four from the Pirates. The Cubs moved within two games of the wild card leaders. Should the teams end up tied at the end of the regular season, Chicago would have home-field advantage, having won the season series with 10 wins in 16 games.
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) β New photos show the severity of the injury to New York Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul’s right hand, clearly showing his index finger mostly missing and his thumb and middle finger also damaged. The New York Daily News posted a photograph showing Pierre-Paul without a bandage over his hand that was injured in a Fourth of July fireworks accident.
HOUSTON (AP) β Ryan Mallett will get the start at quarterback this week for the Houston Texans. Coach Bill O’Brien says the quarterback will get the start over Bryan Hoyer who had won the starting job in pre-season but lost it with a poor showing in the opening game of the season when he committed two turnovers.
SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) β Left wing Jonathan Huberdeau has a new two-year contract with the Panthers. Huberdeau led the team with 54 points last season and Panthers general manager Dale Tallon says the deal is “very fair” for both sides.
