NEW YORK (AP) β€” In what could be a preview of a Subway Series, the Mets host the Yankees this evening in the opener of a weekend series. The NL East-leading Mets head into the game with a modest two-game losing streak after winning eight in a row. The Yankees are 3 1-2 games back of AL East-leading Toronto, but are ahead in the wildcard race.

CHICAGO (AP) β€” The Cubs and Cardinals open a weekend series at Wrigley Field that pits playoff contenders against each other. St. Louis leads the NL Central by 4 1-2 games over the Pirates, from whom the Cubs just took three of four. That moved Chicago within 6 1-2 games of the Cardinals.

LOS ANGELES (AP) β€” Zach Greinke (GREHN’-kee) takes his major league-leading 1.61 ERA into his start for the Dodgers at home against Pittsburgh tonight. It’s the start of an 11-game road trip for the Pirates, who are battling for a playoff spot. Pittsburgh has lost three in a row.

JOLIET, Ill. (AP) β€” The Sprint Cup Chase gets going this weekend with qualifying on tap today for the opening race at Chicagoland. Matt Kenseth, Kyle Busch and Jimmie Johnson go into the 16-driver shootout over 10 races leading the pack after four wins each this season.
