Angels downed the Athletics 9-4 and regained a one-game lead over the Athletics in the American League West. Josh Hamilton hit a two-run home run as the Angels jumped on Athletics starter Scott Kazmir for five runs in the first three innings to salvage the finale of the three-game set. Mike Trout hit his 29th homer.
ST. LOUIS (AP) β Don’t tell Sam Bradford lightning can’t strike twice. Bradford has a torn ACL in his left knee, the same injury that sidelined the St. Louis Rams quarterback last season.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) β Carolina Panthers coach Ron Rivera says quarterback Cam Newton has a hairline fracture in his ribs and will miss the team’s final preseason game. Rivera says he expects Newton to be ready for the team’s Sept. 7 regular season opener against Tampa Bay.
PARAMUS, N.J. (AP) β Hunter Mahan (MAY’-han) is a winner on the PGA Tour for the first time in more than two years. Mahan had gone 48 tournaments before winning The Barclays, the first of four playoff events, by two shots over Stuart Appleby, Jason Day and Cameron Tringale.
SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (AP) β Don Wan Sin homered and scored twice as Asia-Pacific Region champion South Korea beat Chicago 8-4 in the Little League World Series championship. Brandon Green went 5 2-3 innings for Chicago, which had survived four straight knockout games before the final.
