NC State upsets No. 1 Villanova

PITTSBURGH (AP) —   Villanova and North Carolina State will try and recapture those 1980s championship feelings with a Sweet 16 berth at stake.

The top-seeded Wildcats (33-2) have won 16 straight games and are coming off their most dominant win of the season against Lafayette.

The eighth-seeded Wolfpack (21-13) are trying to advance to the Sweet 16 for the second time under coach Mark Gottfried.

Both programs are most remembered for their 1980s national championships.

Dereck Whittenburg’s desperate airball heave from 30 feet out that led to Lorenzo Charles’ catch-and-dunk for North Carolina State’s most improbable 1983 title.

Villanova is still the lowest seed to ever win a national title when it beat Georgetown as a No. 8.
