The Edgitators: Should the SC SRO Have Been Fired?

The school resource officer seen on cell phone video pulling a girl from her seat and slamming her to the ground is out of a job. Video of the incident at Spring Valley High School in Columbia went viral.
Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott fired Deputy Ben Fields Wednesday following a 48 hour investigation. The Sheriff says another video shows the student trying to hit the deputy. Still, the Sheriff says Fields did not follow procedure.
“What she did doesn’t justify what our deputy did,” said Sheriff Lott. “I don’t want anybody to think that. It doesn’t justify his actions. But, again, she needs to be held responsible for what she did.”
The deputy was called to the classroom after the student refused a teacher’s instruction to leave, because she was being disruptive. The girl’s attorney says she just wanted to stay in the classroom and continue her education. The FBI and U.S. Attorney’s Office are investigating the incident to determine whether Deputy Fields should face criminal charges.
So, what do you think? Should the school resource officer have been fired? The Edgitators battle it out…
