NEW YORK (AP) β€” Noah Syndergaard (SIHN’-dur-gahard) worked six tough innings and the Mets hit a pair of two-run homers in beating the Kansas City Royals 9-3, pulling New York within two games to one in the World Series. Curtis Granderson provided the go-ahead, two-run homer in the third inning and went 2-for-5 with three runs scored. David Wright also slammed a two-run homer and added a two-run single to become the first Met since Rusty Staub in 1973 to collect four RBIs in a World Series game.

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) β€” Russell Westbrook and Kevin Durant combined for 91 points on Friday, but the Oklahoma City Thunder needed double overtime to beat the Magic 139-136 in Orlando. Westbrook banked in a 3-pointer from just inside midcourt at the end of regulation on his way to 48 points. Kevin Durant added 43 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists to the victory.

MARTINSVILLE, Va. (AP) β€” Joey Logano has won the pole at Martinsville Speedway as he seeks his fourth consecutive Sprint Cup victory. Logano turned a lap at 98.548 mph in qualifying to finish ahead of Martin Truex Jr. and non-Chase drivers AJ Allmendinger and Jamie McMurray. No driver has won four straight Cup races since Jimmie Johnson in 2007.

JUPITER, Fla. (AP) β€” Tiger Woods says he had a follow-up procedure on his back Wednesday to relieve discomfort. Woods underwent a pair of microdiscectomy last year and new says he returned to the Tour too early. There is no timetable on his return.

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. (AP) β€” Scott McCarron and Steve Pate shared the lead at 8-under 63 after the first round of the Champions Tour’s Toshiba Classic. McCarron eagled the par-5 15th and had six birdies and an eagle at Newport Beach Country Club. Billy Andrade (AN’-drayd) and Rod Spittle were a stroke back in the final full-field event of the season.
