WORLD SERIES-GAME 5

Kansas City parties like it’s 1985

NEW YORK (AP) β€” The resilient and relentless Kansas City Royals are World Series champions for the first time in 30 years — thanks to Christian Colon (koh-LOHN’). His pinch-hit RBI tiebreaking single keyed a five-run rally in the top of the 12th inning in the Royals come-from-behind 7-2 victory over the New York Mets to win the World Series in five games.

World Series MVP Salvador Perez opened the 12th inning rally with an opposite field single. Pinch-runner Jarrod (juh-RAHD’) Dyson stole second and moved to third on a groundout. Colon — making his first plate appearance in the playoffs — delivered a run-scoring single off Mets reliever Addison Reed. Alcides (ahl-SEE’-deez) Escobar scored Colon on a double. The Royals then added three more for insurance.

The lightly used Colon is the first player in World Series history to drive in the winning run in a clinching victory in his first plate appearance.

The Royals won all four World Series games coming from behind. After taking the first two at home, the Royals won two of three in New York. In a year of improbable comebacks — they won eight postseason games coming from behind — this was one of the most unlikely of all.

Kansas City trailed 2-0 after Mets right-hander Matt Harvey hurled eight powerful innings, striking out nine. After he gave up a run in the ninth, Harvey gave way to Jeurys (JUR’-his) Familia. The Mets closer allowed the tying run to score on a gutsy baserunning move by Eric Hosmer (HAHS’-mur), who scored from third on a ground out. It was Familia’s third blown save of the series.

That opened the door for the Royals’ extra inning heroics — and their second World Series title in history. The Royals avenged their seven-game loss to San Francisco in last year’s Series.

NFL-SCHEDULE

101 points at the Superdome…Broncos still unbeaten

UNDATED (AP) β€” It was a nail-biter in New Orleans with the Saints winning 52-49, on a last-second 50-yard field goal by Kai (k’eye) Forbath. The 101 combined points are the third most in NFL history. Drew Brees (breez) passed for a career high 511 yards and seven touchdowns. Eli Manning connected on a career-high six touchdown passes, three to fellow New Orleans native Odell Beckham Jr., in the loss. Each team is now 4-4 and the Saints have won four of five after an 0-3 start to the season.

In other Week 8 action:

β€” Denver remained one of the NFL’s unbeaten teams by handing the Green Bay Packers their first loss, 29-10. Ronnie Hillman scored two touchdowns and Peyton Manning threw for a season-high 340 yards on 21 of 29 attempts. Denver’s defense did a shutdown job on the Packers passing game. Green Bay QB Aaron Rodgers completed 14 of 22 passes for just 77 yards, and no touchdowns.

β€” The Baltimore-San Diego game ended with a last-second field goal as well. Justin Tucker kicked a 39-yard field goal on the final play of the game in Baltimore’s 29-26 victory. But Baltimore had bad news even as it raised its mark to 2-6. Receiver Steve Smith tore his right Achilles tendon in the third quarter and is lost for the season. The 15-year veteran had said this would be his last season.

β€” For the first time in franchise history the Bengals are 7-0. Andy Dalton threw a touchdown pass with 2:57 to go and the Bengals picked off Ben Roethlisberger (RAWTH’-lihs-bur-gur) twice in the fourth quarter in a 16-10 win over their AFC North rivals in Pittsburgh.

β€” The Tampa Bay Buccaneers bounced back after blowing a 17-point lead, getting a 31-yard field goal from Connor Barth in overtime to beat the mistake-prone Atlanta Falcons 23-20.

β€” Adrian Peterson ran for 103 yards and Blair Walsh kicked a 36-yard field goal as time expired to lift the Vikings to a 23-20 win over the Bears at Soldier Field.

β€”Brian Hoyer threw for 235 yards and two touchdowns and Houston tied a franchise record with seven sacks as the Texans beat the Titans 20-6.

β€” Derek Carr threw for 333 yards and four touchdowns to help Oakland pick apart the New York Jets’ vaunted defense in a 34-20 victory that put the Raiders in the thick of the playoff race. At 4-3, Oakland is one of five AFC teams with a winning record and looks capable of ending a 12-year run of no winning records or playoff berths.

__ Seattle eked out a 13-12 win over Dallas on Steven Hauschka’s 24-yard field goal with 1:06 left. The Seahawks have reached the .500 mark after an 0-2 start. Dallas is 2-5 with its fifth straight loss since QB Tony Romo was injured.

β€” Carson Palmer threw for four touchdowns, three in the second half, as the Cardinals rallied for a 34-20 win over the Browns in Cleveland. The Browns, who lost two defensive starters with concussions, had a 20-10 halftime lead before Palmer took over, throwing for 374 yards.

β€” Todd Gurley rushed for 133 yards on 20 carries for the Rams who shut down the 49ers in a 27-6 win. Gurley, who had a 71-yard touchdown run, is the first rookie to open his career with four consecutive 100-yard games, according to STATS with data available since 1991.

β€” In an early game played in London the Chiefs had their way with the Lions, 45-10. The fans at Wembley Stadium watched as KC quarterback Alex Smith passed for two scores and 145 yards. He also ran for 78 yards and another TD.

NFL-PATRIOTS

“Snoopgate?”

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) β€” Patriots coach Bill Belichick says he’s not commenting on reports that the New York Jets had their locker room swept for listening devices when they visited New England. The Boston Herald reported this week that the Jets asked the NFL to sweep the visiting locker room for bugs before their Oct. 25 game at Gillette Stadium. The paper also reported that three Patriots employees were interrogated before the game.

Asked about the reports on a conference call, Belichick deferred questions to the league, saying, “We don’t have anything to do with any of those things.”

T25-POLL

Ohio State, Baylor, Clemson and LSU remain top AP foursome

UNDATED (AP) β€” The first College Football Playoff rankings are coming out this Tuesday and with that in mind the newest Associated Press Top-25 poll looks much like last week’s. Ohio State, Baylor, Clemson and LSU remain the top four teams with TCU number-five.

Ohio State, which suspended quarterback J.T. Barrett for this week’s game against Minnesota for being cited for operating a vehicle while impaired, was off Saturday and retained all 39 of its first-place votes. Baylor has six first-place votes after losing one this week but remains a solid No. 2.

No. 3 Clemson also has six first-votes, No. 4 LSU has five and No. 5 TCU has four after picking up the vote Baylor lost.

There’s a sizeable divide between the top five and the rest, with No. 6 Michigan State trailing the Horned Frogs by 87 points.

The pairings for the four-team College Football Playoff will be revealed Dec. 6.

The first suspension was for a violation of program policies.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL-ACC

Officials suspended

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) β€” The Atlantic Coast Conference has suspended the officiating crew that worked the Miami-Duke game for two league games for “a series of errors” on the final play. The league announced the decision about 13 hours after the Hurricanes threw a combined eight laterals before Corn Elder took the last one for the game-ending touchdown that beat Duke 30-27.

In a statement announcing the suspension of the on-field crew, the replay official and the communicator, Commissioner John Swofford said that final play “was not handled appropriately.”

Dwyane (DWAYN) Wade scored 20 points and Luol Deng added 14 for Miami, which outscored Houston 65-24 in the final 23 minutes. It was Miami’s largest comeback win since a 27-point rally against Cleveland in March 2013.

In other NBA action:

β€” Dwane Casey got his franchise-record 157th win as coach of the Toronto Raptors with a 106-87 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks. The milestone came in his 315th game with the Raptors, besting the previous record held by current Minnesota Timberwolves coach Sam Mitchell.

β€” Dallas dropped the L.A. Lakers to 0-3 by winning 102-93 at Staples Center. Dirk Nowitzki (noh-VIHT’-skee) led the Mavs with 25 points and nine boards. Zaza Pachilla added 16 points and 12 rebounds.

NBA-PELICANS

Perkins sidelined

NEW ORLEANS (AP) β€” The New Orleans Pelicans say there’s no timetable for how long veteran center Kendrick Perkins will need to come back from a pectoral injury. Perkins, who started New Orleans’ first three games, was hurt in the first quarter Saturday night in a 134-120 loss to the Golden State Warriors. He has averaged 5.3 points and 2.7 rebounds this season.

NHL-SCHEDULE

San Jose Burns Avs…Habs are 11-2

UNDATED (AP) β€” A day after a tough loss in Dallas, the San Jose Sharks weren’t going to let another game get away from them in the third period. Brent Burns made sure of that. Burns broke a tie with 1:39 left and the Sharks beat the Colorado Avalanche 4-3.

In other Sunday hockey:

β€” Montreal improved to 11-2 by whacking Winnipeg 5-1. Tomas Fleischmann had two goals and one assist. Mike Condon stopped 18 shots to improve to 4-0 as the backup to Carey Price, who is out at least a week with a lower body injury.

β€” Tampa Bay scored a 4-3 road win at Carolina. Ryan Callahan and Steven Stamkos scored in the second period to give Tampa Bay the lead.

β€” Chris Stewart had a goal and two assists, Frederick Andersen stopped 40 shots, and the Anaheim Ducks beat the Nashville Predators 4-2.

NASCAR-GOODY’S

Kenseth causes wreck to deny Logano the win

RIDGEVILLE, Va. (AP) β€”Matt Kenseth got his revenge on Joey Logano. Upset for Logan’s knocking him out the lead in a race recently, Kenseth intentionally wrecked Logano who had a big lead at Martinsville. The benefactor of all the dramatics was Jeff Gordon who finished first. Logan had been trying to win for the fourth consecutive time in NASCAR’s playoffs.

The act knocked Logano out of a race he had dominated and handed the win to Gordon.

The win was Gordon’s first of the season and ninth at Martinsville.

The four-time NASCAR champion had to earn the win after a caution with seven laps remaining set up one final restart. Gordon held off Jamie McMurray over the final two laps.

FORMULA 1

Rosberg wins

MEXICO CITY (AP) β€” Pole-sitter Nico (NEE’-koh) Rosberg of Mercedes won the first Mexican Grand Prix since 1992 for his fourth victory of the season. He also gained a sliver of satisfaction in defeating teammate Lewis Hamilton, who has beaten him to the season championship the past two years.

Hamilton finished second, losing his bid to tie the Formula One record of 13 season victories. He has 10 with two races left. The victory pushed Rosberg into second place in the driver standings ahead of Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel, who failed to finish the race after a crash.

PGA-CIMB CLASSIC

American Thomas wins in Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) β€” Justin Thomas overcame a double bogey on the 14th and some nervous moments on the final hole to win the CIMB Classic for his first PGA Tour title. The 22-year-old American holed a 6-foot par putt on the par-5 18th for a one-stroke victory over Australian star Adam Scott. Thomas shot a 6-under 66 for a tournament-record finish of 26-under.

Thomas, who had a course-record 61 in the second round, seemed to have blown his chances when he hit into the water at 14, but immediately rallied with three consecutive birdies to take the outright lead.
