NEW YORK (AP) β The fall art auction season gets underway with Sotheby’s offering blue-chip works of art from the renowned collection of its late former owner, A. Alfred Taubman.
The 77 works being sold Wednesday include Willem de Kooning’s “Untitled XXI,” Amedeo Modigliani’s “Paulette Jourdain” and Pablo Picasso’s “Woman Seated on a Chair.” All have estimates ranging from $25 million to $35 million.
Taubman died in April. His reputation was tarnished in 2001 when he was convicted in a price-fixing scandal. He spent nine months in prison.
The following day, the auction house is offering a landscape by Vincent van Gogh that could realize as much as $70 million.
A nude portrait from Picasso, “The Night Club Singer,” is estimated to sell for $60 million. The seller is billionaire William Koch (kohk).
