Gastonia Police Target Distracted Drivers After Increase in Deadly Crashes

GASTONIA, NC – The Gastonia Police Department will launch a month-long Safe Streets Initiative Monday. The city has seen the highest number of deadly car crashes since 2007. Police say speeding is a factor in many of them.

“Young people and old people. They’re, I see them, they’re always texting when they’re driving, or doing something, or kinda swerving on the road,” says Gastonia resident Juanita Williams.

“This is your warning. We’re gonna have zero tolerance. We’re gonna be out here enforcing and handing out citations to drivers that are have not complied,” explains Gastonia Police Sergeant Keith McCabe.

McCabe points to accidents like one that happened last weekend on Garrison Boulevard.

“A woman was killed by an impaired driver traveling the wrong way, and also speeding was also a contributing factor to the collision,” McCabe says.

Along with Garrison Boulevard, police say you can expect to see added patrols along New Hope Road, US 321, Robinwood Road, Redbud Drive, and Hudson Boulevard.
