The Gastonia Fire Department responded to the fire in the 1200 block of Cedar Avenue around 12:44 a.m. Sunday.  They saw smoke coming from the back of the home when they arrived.

Officials say there was a fire in the kitchen and firefighters extinguished it in about 10 minutes.

After being alerted by the dog, the resident was able to escape the home safely.

The fire was caused by an electrical malfunction in the home’s heating system and caused an estimated $10,000 in damages.

Officials say the home had no working smoke alarm.
