CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education voted to approve five goals that will help frame the development of a student assignment plan, which would take effect no sooner than the 2017-2018 school year.

The approved goals are as follows:
· Provide choice and promote equitable access to varied and viable programmatic options for all children; and
· Maximize efficiency in the use of school facilities, transportation and other capital and operational resources to reduce overcrowding.
· Reduce the number of schools with high concentrations of poor and high needs children.
· Provide school assignment options to students assigned to schools that are not meeting performance standards established by the state.
· Preserve and expand schools and programs in which students are successfully achieving the Mission and Vision of the Board.
The board also concluded a student assignment survey on Feb. 22nd. Survey results, which reflect input from 27,240 community members, will also be used to inform the development of a student assignment plan.
Survey results will be presented at an upcoming Board meeting.
