ALEXANDER COUNTY, NC — Β The Alexander County Sheriff’s Office isn’t yet revealing the name of the church where investigators believe a Taylorsville woman sexually abused a four-year-old.
Deputies arrested Carol Britto Thursday night after a nearly two-year investigation into the crime. Finally, Sheriff Chris Bowman says detectives and the District Attorney felt there was enough evidence to jail Britto.
A cross sits in Britto’s front yard. Neighbors like Anajhah Bruner pictured her as a wholesome woman next door, never expecting a mug shot accusing her of sexual misconduct in a church.
Β
“I feel pretty disgusted knowing she’s my neighbor,” said Bruner.
Β
Strong words, but she isn’t alone.
Β
“It disgusted me,” said Joy Wachob.Β
Β
Parents across the area were stunned to learn Britto may have sexually assaulted the four-year-old in 2012.
Β
“It’s really sad that even in a church, you think you can take your walls down and be vulnerable,” said Wachob. “You can’t be that way.”
Β
Parents wonder which church, and Sheriff Bowman explained why he isn’t ready to release that information.
Β
“No need to point out a church when the church really did not stand behind this to happen to begin with,” said Sheriff Bowman.
Β
Something Wachob can understand.Β
Β
“They could have done a criminal background check. Could have been no red flags whatsoever. She could have watched kids for years and never been arrested,” said Wachob. “You can’t blame the church.”
Β
Now a court will decide if the Sunday School teacher is innocent.Β
Β
Britto faces one count of First Degree Statutory Sex Offense and one count of Indecent Liberties with a Child. Sheriff Bowman says the investigation could lead to more charges and more victims.Β
