Charlotte, N.C. – Charlotte 49ers senior center Joseph Uchebo was named second team All-Conference USA in a vote by the league’s head coaches and media members in each conference city. He is the 40th different Niner to earn all-conference honors in the program’s history.
“I can’t say enough about what Joseph has meant to our team this year,” Charlotte coach Mark Price said. “He has been an absolute warrior for us night in and night out. He has been the man in the middle for us with an undersized team. I haven’t seen many college seasons better than what Joseph has produced for us this season after averaging a double-double and breaking a Conference USA rebounding record. He is more than deserving to be on the All-Conference USA team. We are extremely proud of Joseph as not only a player but as person. We are very thankful that he is our part of our 49ers family.”
Uchebo finished the regular-season averaging 13.3 points per game to go along with a Conference USA leading 11.5 rebounds per game which ranks him ninth in the nation in rebounding. In Conference USA play, he averaged 15.8 points and 13.3 rebounds per game. In the UTSA game (February 25), he passed Kenyon Martin, who set the record in the 1999-00 season, for the Conference USA single-season record for rebounds in league play. He finished the season with a new Conference USA record for rebounds in league play with 239 boards. Uchebo tallied 23 double-figure scoring games, six 20-point scoring games, 17 double-figure rebounds games and 16 double-doubles, which is tied for the fourth highest single-season total in school history. He also grabbed at least 18 rebounds in seven games this season. In the 49ers victory over Marshall in Halton Arena (January 21), he was the first Niner in 10 years to score 20 points and grab 20 rebounds in a game with his 24 points and 21 rebounds performance.
Uchebo and the rest of the seventh-seed 49ers return to action in the second round of the Conference USA Tournament in Birmingham, Alabama against tenth-seed Rice, Wednesday, March 9 at 7 pm.
