HUDSPETH COUNTY, TX — Texas Highway Patrol tells WCCB two Charlotte residents were killed and a third person injured after an accident involving a tractor-trailer.
According to officials, on Tuesday around 9 p.m., Jeffrey Turner, 24, was attempting a left turn from the right lane when his vehicle collided with the semi. Both Turner and his passenger, 33-year-old Janiva “Jay” Willis, were killed in the crash. Troopers say Willis was not wearing a seat belt.
The tractor-trailer driver was injured but is expected to be okay.
Willis and Turner were on a 78-day cross country bike ride from San Diego, California to Charlotte, North Carolina. Janiva Willis created The Dream Challenge Tour to raise funds and awareness of the importance of mentoring children from challenging backgrounds.
The Willis family has set up a fundraiser to continue what The Dream Challenge started. Proceeds will help fund various mentoring programs. You can learn more about it here.
