A strong geomagnetic storm brought the northern lights as far south as South Carolina on Sunday
NORTH CAROLINA (WCCB) — A strong geomagnetic storm brought the northern lights as far south as South Carolina on Sunday!
The geomagnetic storm scale indicates the severity of the storms. They are measured 1 to 5. This one was a 3, so rather strong. NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center says the estimated planetary K index was as high as a 7 (G3) on Sunday.
The solar cycle is the cycle that the Sun’s magnetic field goes through roughly every 11 years. During this time, the sun emits energy that reaches maximums and minimums. The maximum is expected mid 2024 toward 2025, therefore, there will be more opportunities for Aurora sightings in the next year!
