CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The latest drought monitor is in – and it’s not looking good. Severe drought is now covering the majority of the WCCB Charlotte viewing area, as extreme drought creeps in from the west. An extremely dry pattern paired with above-average temperatures is to blame for the worsening drought, and not much relief is in sight.
It’s been nearly one month since our last day with measurable rainfall at Charlotte-Douglas airport. Fortunately, that streak likely comes to an end this weekend as a rainmaking system approaches from the west. Unfortunately, models are not bullish on rain totals. the latest guidance suggests most communities in our half of the Carolinas will end up with less than a half-inch of rain over the next five days. At this point, however, we’ll take whatever we can get.
Much of western North Carolina remains under a burn ban until further notice. Multiple wildfires continue to burn across the Foothills and mountains of North Carolina and Virginia.
