Driver Charged After Car Gets Stuck By Train In Matthews

After further investigation, the Mecklenburg County Magistrate’s office has charged 34-year-old James Edge with driving while impaired. Investigators from the Matthews Police Department formally served notice of these charges to Mr. Edge by criminal summons on Friday, January 5, 2024.

MATTHEWS, N.C. – Two people were sent to the hospital after a car was stuck by a train on North Trade Street in Matthews on Wednesday, December 13th, according to a news release.

Officers responded to the scene around 9:30 p.m. Upon arrival, it was discovered that a car traveling southbound on North Trade Street had been stuck by the train as the vehicle came onto the tracks. The two people inside were transported to the hospital with unknown injuries and are now in critical, but stable condition.

The preliminary investigation indicates that the railroad crossing audible and visual warnings, including the gate arms, were engaged and working properly during the time of this crash.
