Investigators say James Williams, 49, was riding his Harley-Davidson up the Brookshire Freeway towards I-77 around 9:25pm Thursday when he lost control and had to lay his bike down. Williams and the motorcycle separated and slid to a stop. The bike slid out of the travel lanes, but Williams came to a stop in the left lane.

Witnesses say Houser, who was driving a Ford F-150, then hit Williams while he was laying in the road but kept going.

Williams was pronounced dead on the scene.

Two witnesses followed Houser, called 911, and guided police to his location. Gastonia Police were able to catch up with Houser on I-85 near exit 19 and pulled him over. CMPD was also called to the scene of the stop and Houser was taken into custody for DWI.

After an interview with detectives Houser was charged with DWI, Felony Death By Motor Vehicle, and Felony Hit and Run.

Houser was convicted for driving while impaired in Wake County in 1996.

Police say the investigation is still ongoing.
