Winter begins Thursday

EXCERPT: The temperatures will drop this week as winter begins Thursday.

SUBTITLE: High pressure dominates the East Coast this week along with the big chill!

Sunshine has returned for this week, we will pay for it with very cold air. Bitter cold overnight lows this week will drop us into the 20’s again with gusty winds filling in after Sunday’s low pressure system. Strong northwesterly flow gusting upwards of 50 mph will bring a healthy 1-3″ of snow in the High Country over the next 36 hours, but everywhere else will remain dry and sunny to start the workweek. Highs will struggle to clear the 30s and 40s on Tuesday. Temperatures gradually recover throughout the week thanks to abundant sunshine, but highs will only end up five degrees above average at best as we head into Christmas weekend.

This week’s weather will be different from the last several weeks. We will stay cold. Some moderation in temperatures will occur as we get to Christmas weekend.  It appears mainly sunny with highs approaching 60° across the Piedmont and Foothills. Your snapshot of Christmas Day looks mostly cloudy as afternoon temperatures end up in the 40s and 50s. Rain chances may build in by Christmas night.
