Winter Wanders Into New Year

Most communities will wake up to below-freezing temperatures as we slide into 2024.

The final Friday of 2024 is here, and it’s bringing big changes to your weather-wise forecast. An upper-level low swings in behind the cold front that moved through the Carolinas yesterday, bringing in some stubborn cold air for our holiday weekend. Highs will struggle to clear the 30s and 40s this afternoon as northwest flow leads to scattered snow showers in the mountains. A stray shower or flurry is possible later in the day in the northern Piedmont and Foothills, but don’t expect anything significant. Mountain snow continues into Saturday before ceasing by the evening. Highs will top out in the 30s and 40s for most communities again through the weekend’s first half.

New Year’s Eve Sunday will be a bit warmer, but it will still feel like winter with highs in the 40s and lower 50s. Scattered clouds will build in overnight as we enter the new year, but rain chances remain low through the weekend. 2024 will start on a grayer note with near-average highs. A few rain chances crop up in the heart of the first week of January, but high-impact weather is not in the forecast. Models show another round of mountain snow arriving mid-to-late week, but the white stuff doesn’t appear to be in the cards for the Piedmont just yet.
