CHARLOTTE, NC — A frightening reminder of why you should never try to beat a train coming down the tracks: the driver of a delivery truck told police he thought he could beat a train on West Summitt Avenue at South Clarkson Street around rush hour Wednesday.  The train slammed into him and demolished the box part of the truck.  The man who pulled the truck driver from the cab talked to WCCB.

“Oh, he’s lucky to be alive,” said Michael Knight, “because he started off in the driver’s seat, and when we got there, he was leaned on the passenger seat with his head up in the windshield, and was clear, conscious, knew where he was.  To be hit by a train, I would expect him to be in a lot worse shape than what he was.”

The truck was carrying snack food.  No word from CMPD if charges against the driver will be filed.
