Byron enjoying Breakthrough Rookie Trucks Season

MOORESVILLE, NC (WCCB Charlotte) — William Byron is surprised his friends keep up with his career so much.

Maybe its because he keeps winning.

Byron has three victories in nine races this season. He’s currently on top of the Camping World Truck series standings.

“I think its a credit to our race team and how we have been able to bond,” Byron said. “We are finally putting it together on a weekly basis.”

Pretty incredible for an 18-year old who is just a month removed from his Country Day High School graduation ceremony.

William signs autographs for fans, receives hundreds of text messages from friends and has made an incredible first impression on the NASCAR world. So how does Byron stay grounded through his breakout season?

He credits a background as an Eagle Scout.

“It helps me keep things in perspective,” Byron said.

With William’s solid season to this point and the pressing time commitments that a driver endures, he could be a full-time racer. But that’s not Byron’s way. The Kyle Busch Motorsports driver will be going to school at Liberty University next fall–the college who happens to also be the main sponsor on his No. 9 Toyota Tundra.

In five years, William sees himself with his business degree from Liberty, but also sees in NASCAR’s top series competing with the best of the sport. He hopes to be a part of the next generation of drivers who are taking the sport by storm.

“There’s a few guys that are retiring,” Byron said. “Jeff Gordon last year (and) Tony Stewart this year. And I think there’s a wave coming in to replace those guys. Hopefully, I’m looking to be a part of that wave.”
