Monroe-Union Breakfast Rotary To Plant Trees Along Walking Path Behind Monroe Aquatics And Fitness Center

CHARLOTTE, NC — February 13 at 8:00 a.m. the Monroe-Union Breakfast Rotary will be planting trees along the walking path behind the Monroe Aquatics and Fitness Center Pool.

According to Union County Arborist Keith O’Herrin, “Trees filter our local air and water, cool our community in the summer by 2 to 10 degrees, and significantly improve our lives and property values. But our tree cover has been receding every year as development cuts down our forests and paves them over. Our canopy is a local treasure, and definitely something we need to revive and protect.”

The MUB Rotary has been by planting trees for local companies, schools, and landholders for the last 5 years, and has helped to educate local 4 th graders on the importance of trees. With this project, the Rotary will be planting Nutall oaks around the parking lot behind the fitness center to shade both the parking lot and the walkway leading to the Williams Road sports fields.

According to Ryan Jones, Monroe Parks and Recreation Director, “We have been developing some great walking paths along the Monroe Greenway, but several areas are still unshaded. With the help of groups like the Rotary, we hope to eventually shade the open areas over all the walkways.”
