CHARLOTTE, NC (news release) — On the first weekend in February, the Monroe-Union Breakfast and the Union West Rotary Clubs are sponsoring a fun family event featuring the famous Harlem Wizards. Since 1962, the Wizards have been delighting audiences with their dramatic alley-oops, bombs from half court, no-look bounce baskets, and hilarious comedy. Their teams have visited nearly all 50 states, as well as tours of Brazil, Argentina, Taiwan, Italy, Belgium, and China. Twenty-five former NBA players have played with the Wizards, as well as several other sports stars who have toured with them or played against them.
Proceeds from the game benefit county elementary schools and also fund scholarships sponsored by Rotary for deserving high school students.
The Wizards’ model focuses on elementary schools, who offer some of their popular teachers and coaches who make up the home team. The teams then meet in a fun game in which some basketball is played, and a lot of comedy is performed involving the teams, referees, and sometimes even an audience member or two.
“It’s all great fun,” says John Thomasson, president of the Monroe Union Breakfast Rotary. “Mid-winter is the perfect time for an indoor event that the whole family can enjoy.”
Games will be played at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, Feb 2 at Sun Valley High School, and at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 3 at Monroe High School. Doors will open at 6:00 o’clock. Advance tickets are available online at the addresses below or at the door if there are still seats available.
