Power Restored to 2500 After Matthews-area Outage

MATTHEWS, NC – Power outages, pushed hundreds of Charlotte-area families outside in the heat of the day Sunday.

A busted transformer left more than 2500 people without power or AC near Matthews. 

A witness says the transformer near the intersection of McKee and Weddington Roads caught fire and toppled over around 4:30pm. According to Duke Energy, the issue was caused by a mechanical issue.
 
Originally, 2500 people were out of power. That number was reduced to 1500 after re-circuiting.
By 10:00pm, most of the outages were restored.
