Few Showers Tuesday, Bitter Cold Ahead
Scattered light rain will impact your morning commute around the Metro and southward, but the bigger story will be the brutal wind chills that blow in tonight.
We’re off to a soggy start this Tuesday morning as we round into the second half of January. Snow showers continue in the High Country before largely tapering off by the afternoon. Rain showers will pick up throughout the morning in the Piedmont, especially south and east of I-85. While wet roads may cause a few problems for your morning commute around the Metro, overall impacts will be minor. Most of the moisture clears out by the mid-afternoon. The bigger story will be bitter cold rushing in as we wake up on Wednesday. Your Tuesday afternoon highs will struggle to get out of the 30s and lower 40s before lows crash into the teens and 20s across the Piedmont and Foothills. Our mountain counties will start Hump Day near 0° with wind chills well into the negatives.
Temperatures will barely crack 40° Wednesday afternoon in the Queen City before another bone-chilling night. Highs recover a bit toward the back half of the week but remain below average. A weak disturbance sweeps into the Carolinas by Friday morning, which could lead to a few flurries into the North Carolina Piedmont, but totals will be negligible. Mountain snow is also likely as we head into the weekend, although it won’t be as much as what we saw on Monday. More frigid air crashes into the Carolina on Saturday; the weekend looks cold and dry around Charlotte.
