However, we don’t often look at the other end of the spectrum – safety as a pedestrian around cars! Today, we’ve got N Charlotte Toyota safety tips for pedestrians who aren’t behind the wheel… read on!
Use our N Charlotte Toyota safety tips to navigate the sidewalks!
The first thing to remember as a pedestrian is just because you’re paying attention doesn’t mean everyone else is – particularly, the people behind the wheel of their car. That’s why we encourage you to use the old adage “better safe than sorry” and always proceed with caution when you’re walking near traffic or crossing streets. Here are some basic safety tips we got straight from the sales specialists at Toyota of N Charlotte:
Stay on the sidewalks – that’s what they’re there for! Sidewalks provide you with a safe space to get to your final destination, and Toyota of N Charlotte recommends using them whenever possible. If you don’t have a sidewalk available to use, walk on the shoulder of the road as far from the traffic as possible, and walk facing oncoming traffic so you can react quickly.
Avoid wearing headphones when you’re walking. They drown out important noise that you need to hear in order to avoid a collision and up your chances of being injured. If you have to wear them, keep the volume low or just wear one ear bud.
Use your defensive driving skills while walking
Always cross at crosswalks, especially at night. Crosswalks are designed to be safe places for pedestrians to cross, and set aside time in each light cycle for you to do so. Drivers will expect you to be crossing here, so they’re more likely to be looking out for you. This is especially true at night – it can be dangerous to cross the street in dim lighting if you’re not at a crosswalk.
Look left, look right, and look left again. Never assume that drivers are paying as much attention as you, especially when they’re turning right at a red light and you have the right of way. Our N Charlotte Toyota sales specialists suggest ALWAYS double-checking that your path is clear!
Carry a flashlight and wear light-colored clothing at night. This will make you more visible to drivers than if you were wearing dark colors, which means you’re less likely to be injured.
