Man Arrested In Iredell County For Scamming The Elderly, Pretending To Be An FBI Agent

TROUTMAN, N.C. – A Georgia man was arrested in Iredell County after scamming elderly people and pretending to be an FBI agent.

Bin Zhu, 62, was arrested on Tuesday, January 30th. 

Law enforcement was notified of Zhu, a scammer identifying himself as an FBI agent, going to a home on Hazel Lane in Troutman. 

Zhu would allegedly contact elderly citizens and tell them their bank account was compromised and needed to withdraw all the money and turn it over to the FBI. 

Authorities set up surveillance outside the Troutman home. Police arrested Zhu once he arrived and made contact with the victim.

Zhu admitted to officers he was there to pick up money and also had illegal narcotics in his vehicle. Police searched Zhu’s vehicle and found $3,890 in cash and multiple vials of cocaine and ecstasy.

Zhu was charged with the following:

  • Felony Obtaining Property By False Pretense
  • Felony Possession With Intent To Sell Or Deliver Cocaine
  • Felony Possession Of Cocaine
  • Felony Possession Of Schedule I Controlled Substance
  • Felony Possession With Intent To Sell Or Deliver MDA/MDMA
  • Felony Maintain A Vehicle For A Controlled Substance
  • Misdemeanor Possession Of Drug Paraphernalia 

Zhu was issued no bond on his charges.
