Lanes Finally Reopen On I-85 Following Monday’s Chemical Spill

CHARLOTTE, NC — Officials with the NCDOT say all lanes have reopened, except for the shoulder, where an accident caused a tanker to spill 1,000 gallons of asphalt sealant Monday evening.

The three vehicle accident happened just after 7:30pm Monday on I-85 southbound between the Little Rock Road and I-485 exits. Medic says three were taken to CMC-Pineville for treatment.

Multiple agencies responded to the scene to help with cleanup and traffic control throughout the night. Officials say sand and other absorbent materials were used to help soak up the highly flammable sealant.

Crews were finally able to reopen all lanes around 6am Tuesday. Only the shoulder remains blocked.
