Car In 42-Year-Old Disappearance Case Found

CHOCOWINITY, N.C. – The decades-old cold case involving the disappearance of three men in eastern North Carolina is one step closer to being solved.

A rusty 1975 Chevy Camaro was pulled out of a creek earlier this month. Investigators are now able to determine it belonged to one of the missing men.

The VIN number links a car that went missing in 1982 to the remains that sat suspended in water unnoticed for almost half a century.

The three men were last seen in a bar in Chocowinity before vanishing without a trace 41 years ago.

The rusty car was lifted out of Jacks Creek on February 9th.

“For a vehicle to match, that’s one step closer to closure for the families that have been waiting for 41 years,” Chief Phil Rollinson said.

What’s next is for the police to match the DNA to the human remains found in the car.

The car will go back to the Clifton family for them to decide what to do with it.
