Shirley Torrance has been charged with six counts of misdemeanor child abuse following an incident in February involving children riding in the car with no seat belts.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – A local preschool has been shut down by the NC Department of Health and Human Services, which says the “emergency action” was necessary. Midwood Learning Academy on Central Avenue was ordered to inform parents of all enrolled children that the business would be closed immediately.

One of the parents posted a photo to social media and said the employees put seven kids in a car with no car seats or seat belts, took them to a nearby park, and sat in the car and smoked weed while the kids played unsupervised.

Shirley Torrence owns Midwood Learning Academy. She can appeal the decision and try to get her license back.
