CATAWBA COUNTY – A 14-year-old riding a makeshift skateboard died after being struck by a freight-liner truck on Tuesday.
Highway patrol responded to Caleb Road near East Maiden Road around 3:50 p.m.
The juvenile was critically injured and transported to Atrium health where he sucummed to his injuries.
The driver of the freightliner, Mark Swink, 19, of Shelby, and passenger were not injured.
The initial investigation does not indicate impairment or speed to be contributing factors in the collision. All occupants were restrained by seatbelts.
During the on-scene investigation, the roadway was closed in the area for approximately one hour. No charges will be filed in this case against the driver.
