Concord Man Known As Batman Charged With Homicide

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. — A Concord man known as Batman has been charged with shooting and killing a friend following an argument, according to authorities.

On Thursday, March 21, 2024, at 12:50 pm, deputies with the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office were called to Crystal Lane in Kannapolis after a resident there called 911 and reported a family member had been shot. The caller stated that the suspect, who had already left the scene, goes by the name of Batman.

Arriving officers found 33-year-old Jonathan Wayne Yancey dead inside the home, as a result of a single gunshot wound, according to a news release.

Authorities say witnesses on the scene identified the shooter as 36-year-old Cody Dewayne Helms, a resident of Concord. Helms was a friend of the victim and moments before the shooting, an argument occurred between the two, according to a news release.

Investigators say Helms fled the scene after the killing and was soon captured by a Kannapolis Police officer who was assisting with the search one mile from the scene.
