Feeling Like Summer… For Now

A low-end severe threat opens up on Friday followed by much cooler air by the end of the weekend.

Get ready for the hottest day we’ve seen so far in 2024. This Thursday is off to a mild start as lows are only dipping into the 50s and 60s this morning. Temperatures will quickly warm up after sunrise, soaring into the upper 80s this afternoon; some spots in the Piedmont may see their first 90° day of the year today. You can count on unabated sunshine today, but clouds quickly build in overnight into Friday as a rainmaking system approaches from the west. A line of gusty showers may greet us as we wake up on the final day of the workweek, but rain totals won’t add up to much. A few isolated storms will pop up later in the day on Friday; some may pack gusty winds and small hail.

Friday’s system will likely stall just to our south as we head into the weekend. The positioning of the stalled front is key: if it ends up far enough south, cooler air will quickly build into the Carolinas and keep us in the 60s through the weekend. If the stalled front stays farther north, cooler air won’t arrive until Sunday. Regardless, another rainmaking system will slide along the stationary boundary and bring scattered showers Saturday night into much of Sunday. The cooler trend continues into the start of next week, but highs will quickly recover back into the 80s by next Wednesday.
