RALEIGH, NC — Democratic Senator Kay Hagan and Republican Challenger Thom Tillis met in the first of three debates Wednesday night in Raleigh. The two candidates disagreed on several issues.
Tillis says Hagan would be a rubber stamp for President Obama. The Senator says the State Speaker will move North Carolina backwards by supporting tax cuts over help for women and students.
“During my six years, teachers got a 21 percent pay raise. Every child, every parent knows the value of a great teacher, except Speaker Tillis,” said Senator Hagan.
“We’ve got a 7 percent pay increase, which is one of the largest pay increases to teachers in the last 20 years. We’ve actually reduced classroom sizes,” said Speaker Tillis.
Hagan and Tillis will square off again next month. George Stephanopoulos will moderate the debate on October 7.
