STATESVILLE, N.C. – A man is in custody after officials said he fired a weapon in the direction of an occupied vehicle during a road rage incident before being involved a standoff with police officers on Wednesday afternoon, according to the Statesville Police Department.
It started around 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon when police responded to MLK Jr. Park and Lakewood Drive in regards to shots fired.
Police conducted an investigation and learned that a female driver was involved in a road rage incident with another vehicle. The female driver was allegedly being followed by the other vehicle, leading her to drive to the National Guard Armory in Statesville and called 911.
The two vehicles drove into the National Guard Armory parking lot before a man in the other vehicle pulled out a firearm and pointed it towards the ground in the direction of the woman’s vehicle, officials said.
Police said he fired multiple rounds and struck the vehicle – occupied by the female driver and her juvenile daughter – once.
At this time, the suspect left the area.
Officers obtained information and a description of the suspect’s vehicle from the victims and were able to locate it at a home on Fieldstone Circle.
Police, knowing the suspect is armed, created a perimeter around the home in an attempt to get him to leave.
The standoff went on for a couple of hours before the suspect exited the home without incident around 5:30 p.m.
The suspect, whose name has not been released, was taken to a hospital to receive a medical evaluation.
The incident is still under investigation.
