What To Know About Compensation If Your Flight Is Canceled Or Delayed

CHARLOTTE, NC –Memorial Day Weekend travel is in full swing. Hundreds of flights at CLT were delayed on Thursday due to weather.

When your flight is now delayed, a new federal law requires airlines to refund passengers if a flight is canceled or delayed more than 3 hours. If your bags are delayed more than 12 hours domestically, or if you paid for extra service and didn’t get it, you’re entitled to your money back.

“It’s automatic without you having to ask or fight or haggle for that, because that’s been a huge issue as well for passengers,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary, Pete Buttigieg.

Buttigieg explained airlines are required to initiate those refunds in a prompt manner, with the full amount and to the original payment.

“If you run into a problem, let us know, because we have been able to follow up and help get passengers billions of dollars in refunds that they were owed by the airlines and we will enforce these rules,” said Buttigieg.
