Man Arrested For Firing At Deputy And Civilian Vehicles In Rowan County

CHINA GROVE, N.C. – Deputies arrested a man after they said he shot at both police cruisers and civilian vehicles while intoxicated Saturday night in Rowan County.

It happened around 8:30 p.m. Saturday on NC Highway 152 near Daughtery Road and Fish House Road.

The sheriff’s office said two deputies patrolling the area heard gunfire before their vehicles were struck by a bullet.

The deputies went back to search the area when they encountered 44-year-old Zackery Ryhan Johnson in the front yard of a home on Highway 152.

Officials said when one deputy was questioning Johnson, the other deputy spotted a small caliber rifle with a scope and a box of 22-caliber ammunition on the ground in front of the home.

While still being questioned, Johnson allegedly started walking away and began to resist arrest when deputies attempted to detain him. The sheriff’s office said he assaulted one of the deputies by twisting a hand and finger and also kicked the other deputy.

The deputies eventually detained Johnson and placed him in the patrol vehicle.

In total, three patrol vehicles and three civilian vehicles were damaged.

The sheriff’s office said that Johnson had mixed prescription medication and alcohol, causing him to suffer a medical issue. He was transported to the hospital for treatment before being released on Tuesday.

After being released, Johnson was placed in the Rowan County Detention Center without bond. He is facing the following charges:

  • Attempted First-Degree Murder, 2 counts
  • Assault with a Deadly Weapon With Intent To Kill, 4 counts
  • Discharging a Weapon into Occupied Property, 6 counts
  • Assault on a Government Official, 2 counts
  • Resist Public Officer, 1 count

No deputies or civilians were injured in the shooting.
