Travelers Set Record On Interstates For Fourth Of July Holiday

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Fourth of July is just days away, and many Americans are getting a head start on their holiday travel. AAA expects more than 1.9 million North Carolinians to take a road trip this Independence Day.

AAA Says 60 million Americans are traveling by car this Independence Day week heading for vacations. Experts say that’s a new record of travel, topping last years numbers by nearly 3 million travelers.

Some of these travelers are passing through North Carolina, coming from just states away. Others have driven all the way from the Canadian border.
Drivers agree traffic has been quite heavy, especially on the highways surrounding Charlotte. AAA warns drivers this spike in congestion will likely continue through July 7th, especially during the afternoon and evening hours.
