Dangerous Heat Friday, Wetter Stretch Ahead

Shower and storm chances are on the rise through the weekend as a sluggish front stalls over the Carolinas.

Happy Friday! We’re trading in the man-made fireworks for natural ones this weekend as a sluggish cold front approaches the Carolinas from the west. Before the water comes fire – heat index values will likely rise above 105° across much of the Piedmont this Friday afternoon ahead of any shower and storm activity associated with the incoming front. A few storms may be on the heavy side, but the overall severe threat is low. Cloud coverage and rain chances only increase into the weekend as the encroaching rainmaking system draws near, but no single day this weekend appears to be a washout. Highs will fall, however, from the upper 90s today into the lower 90s and upper 80s on Saturday and Sunday around the Metro.

If you’re hoping for any substantial relief from the heat and humidity, you’re barking up the wrong tree – the dog days of summer are here to stay. Recent model trends stall the aforementioned front over the Carolinas, keeping summer-like feels and afternoon pop-up storms in the forecast for the foreseeable future. Highs will remain in the 80s and 90s across the board for the entirety of July’s second week.

Meanwhile, Hurricane Beryl continues to swirl in the extreme western Caribbean. A high-end Category 2 hurricane as of 5 am Friday, Beryl will run aground over Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula before re-emerging over open water in the southern Gulf of Mexico over the next 24 hours. Beryl will take a more northwesterly track and should regain some strength it loses after landfall as it heads towards the Mexico-Texas border. Heavy rainfall and strong winds are likely across southern and eastern Texas by midweek as Beryl’s remnants-to-be stall over the state.
