Charlotte Man Sentenced For Deadly Crash In March 2023
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – A Charlotte man was sentenced to at least eight years in prison for a fatal drunk driving crash in March of 2023.
Alejandro Chavez-Gomez pled guilty Thursday to charges of assault with a deadly weapon and felony death by motor vehicle. The crash killed a man and seriously injured his wife.
The crash happened around 7 p.m. on March 18th, 2023 on Central Avenue near Eastcrest Drive.
Police said Gomez was traveling east on Central Avenue at approximately 94 miles per hour when he went into the right lane and struck a Hyundai from behind. The Hyundai went off the road, struck a power pole and was wedged in an embankment and the pole.
The Hyundai driver, Kendall Ross, died at the scene. He was 29.
Lillian Hennes, the passenger and his wife, needed to be cut out of the car and was transported to Atrium Main with life-threatening injuries. Ross and Hennes had only been married for 10 months.
Police said that Gomez was impaired at the time of the crash.
Gomez will serve 70-96 months for the death by motor vehicle charge and 26-44 months for the assault with a deadly weapon.
