CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Police say speed and reckless driving are believed to be factors in a fatal crash that happened Saturday, July 20th just before 10pm on Monroe Road in east Charlotte, according to a news release.
Upon arrival, investigators say they located a Nissan Xterra and a Honda Accord on Monroe Road near Richland Drive both with severe damage in the roadway.
The driver of the Nissan, Steven Velez, 61, died on the scene, according to a news release.
The preliminary investigation indicates Velez was traveling northwest on Monroe Road when he lost control of his vehicle, crossed the center concrete median and struck the Honda head-on.
The driver of the Honda, Lavaris Ferry, 43, and the vehicle’s passenger, Rodrick Block, 46, were transported by MEDIC to a local hospital with minor injuries, according to a news release
Speed and reckless driving are believed to be factors in the crash for Velez, according to police. Toxicology results are pending at this time.
